SB 725-CMEA Sponsored Legislation
On February 27, 2015, SB 725 was introduced in the California Senate by Senator Loni Hancock. This bill is CMEA's first-ever sponsored legislation. It will require the Superintendent of Public Instruction to convene a panel of experts to recommend new Visual and Performing Arts standards to the State Board. The State Board is required to adopt the standards no later than June 30, 2017.
It has been fourteen years (2001) since California last adopted standards for Visual and Performing Arts. It is imperative that standards be reviewed and updated to reflect he new National Core Arts Standards. California's creative industry is dependent upon strong arts education in the schools!
CMEA will be asking for your help advocating for passage of the bill over the next several months. Information will be forthcoming letting you know more specifically how you can help.
In the meantime, please view the bill language and fact sheet to familiarize yourself with the proposed legislation!
